To do list for "Phoenix Flies" March 6 - 20 includes Neel Reid houses

I'm making a to-do list.

Above is a Neel Reid house. one of my absolute faves. I wonder if he spec'ed the shutter colors. He died too young in 1926, aged 40.

Phoenix Flies is "more than 160 events, from guided tours to lectures to open houses, at dozens of Atlanta's historic sites." It's ideal for architecture tourists in Atlanta.

I got intimidated last year because there are so many events. Work and personal things interfered so I didn't do anything. Shame on me.

Thanks to Atlanta Architect
Rodolfo Castro from Castro Design Studio for urging me to try again. He suggested:
"I recommend you do the Preservation Center's Neel Reid house tour in Druid Hills. It is a great way to see some fantastic houses in a short amount of time."

It's at 6:30 P.M. on Friday March 19, 2010. It's free but you have to call for a reservation and to find out where the tour starts.
Here is a another Druid Hills Need Reid. It's for sale. Distinctive even in a neighborhood of distinctive houses.

But that's not all I want to do. Here is my not-very-short list. Some need R.S.V.P.'s. Some are repeated. Items marked "**" are on my slightly-shorter short list.
There is so much more.

Want one more? A more elaborate house might catch my eye at first. You can't take in this corner unless you slow down.

  1. I haven't heard of this. I'll have to check into it. Sounds like it would be lots of fun to get to tour some of the historic homes around ATL. -Cristi

  2. Thank you for all this information, Terry. My month is fairly solid, but I hope I can take a day at some point and make one of these.

(I am just crazy for decently worn off painted brick. Is there a designated term for that?)

  4. Terry,

Thanks for your support in posting this! It is a great opportunity to see some of our city's treasures. The Atlanta Preservation Center and their partners have done a great thing and kept all the events free to the public.

  5. Thanks for posting this. Rodolfo mentioned it to me too and I haven't had time to do another post about it. There's so much to see and do. It's almost overwhelming. That last picture you posted is great. I'm a sucker for white houses that show their age.

  6. Head over to Ansley Park to see the white one. It's recently had an overhaul, mostly on the inside I guess. I'm happy enough with the outside.

  7. I had no idea he died so young...interesting. He never even saw the Roaring 20's come to an end!

  9. This is in it's 7th year. I don't know about the house far. Many of the tours are available throughout the year from Atlanta Preservation Center.
