Restored: St. Luke's 1913 "Good Shepherd" mural by E. H. Blashfield

In this tradition 100 years is the blink of an eye.

Atlanta's St. Luke's Episcopal Church has restored "The Good Shepherd," a giant canvas by E. H. Blashfield, the artist who did the domed ceiling of the main reading room of the Library of Congress. Before they took the scaffolds down, St. Luke's invited parishioners to see it up close and up high from the scaffolding. Thanks to Bobby Mays who invited Trip Cook and me for a once in a lifetime experience.

It's a canvas "pasted" to the wall. I loved that the restoration of this hundred year old mural and 2014 Living Walls Conference were happening at the same time.

Restoration by IFACS International Fine Art Conservation Studios. They worked 12-hour days for two weeks. Photo by Tripp TLF Photography.

As you walk into the sanctuary, The Good Shepherd seems ancient in muted colors. It's the calm focal point above the alter amid the glorious windows. My photo from an earlier visit.

How big is it? How high. Perhaps twice life size? I forget to ask. In my reverie I forgot to ask everything.

I'm not a high scaffolding person. Nope. But I was going up. My photo.

From the scaffold I felt as if I was in the mural but separate and small. It was in my face. How does the artist manage the distorted up-close view?. Artists figured this out a few thousand years ago, mastered it in the Renaissance. It's an ancient tradition. My photo.

Up here the scaffolding rocked, like being on a floating dock in the waves. Photo by Tripp TLF Photography.

How long to stay up there? My brain and body were floating. I felt a claustrophobia of being so close to the giant painting. The working lights were good for the artists, but glared through my cataracts.

But I could turn around.

Climbing down was like stepping off the dock onto solid ground.

I understand that after the lighting is complete the restorers will return to discuss the mural and the restoration. I hope to go.

Thanks Bobby, Tripp and St. Lukes.

P.S. The 2014 Living Walls mural most in this tradition is by Spanish artist Borondo.

Saturday Walk: Starfish, Reid, Crook, Scogin, Dixon, Shingles

We walked Brookwood Hills yesterday. It's landlocked, compact, picturesque, green and hilly. It's hemmed in by Peacthree Street, Peachtree Creek, and CSX, so you pass by rather than pass through. Thanks to Betsey, Bill, Clark for showing us around.

This is Brookwood Hill's Neel Reid. James Means worked here too designing the bump out to the left and the garden. The pictures, even mine, don't show it in the context with it's neighbors. It's not a stand-alone mansion. It's on 1/3 acre and harmonizes with it's neighbors.

Shingles work here too. Not all the houses insist on top billing, this one is quiet, a 1942 infill.

We find shingles on this 1925 slate-roofed beauty.

This is 64 Wakefield by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects completed in 1998. "Opal ripped through Atlanta . . . a dislocated hurricane . . . leveling trees and wreaking havoc. A 6 foot caliper water oak . . . one of the grand residents of the neighborhood . . . totaled the brick monopoly-block box house from ridge beam to foundations, inciting a major reconsideration of the premises..."

I doubt there was unanimous joy about it but most neighbors seem to have made their peace.

Jane's rental to the Queen from the Telephone Factory roof

I go to events so I can enjoy the buildings. I usually enjoy the events too. That's the case with my 3rd Telephone Factory Art Show and Sale. I'll see you there next December, OK?

Artist Emily D. Cameron was showing.

P1020879-2011-12-04-Telephone-Factory-Tour-Show-artist-Emily-D-Cameron
We sent a full 4-person Architecture Tourist Loft Expedition team: JoAnn, Michelle, David and me.

P1020885-2011-12-04-Telephone-Factory-Tour-Show--Barbara-Rush--D-Lammie-Hanson--TK--Lanette-Gallagher-Tryptic
The artists were friendly: Barbara Rush, D. Lammie Hanson, me, and Lanette Gallagher.

It wasn't long before we found our way to the roof top deck for a video panorama. Watch carefully beginning at 0:30.

To get your bearings. We start facing west toward downtown, we look down at the Beltline, then Midtown, Buckhead, toward Virginia Highlands, Jane's place is due east, to the south is the Beltline.

The top floor was Jane Fonda's Atlanta Home. It's right next door to the Telephone Factory, a stones throw from the Carter Center. Jane has moved out. You'll probably enjoy "Queen Latifah rents Jane Fonda's Atlanta condo."
