Terry's Tiny Critique of Critics Criticizing Criticism - A Tanz FEED at the Lovable Warhorse Cafe

I'll get to Terry's Tiny Critique in a minute because I want to show you the Warhorse Cafe. Most of you have never seen it and some of you never heard of The Goat Farm Arts Center.

On Tuesday night Daniel Fuller - Atlanta Contemporary, Laura Relyea - ArtsATL, Karen Head - Atlanta Review, and Chuck Reese - Bitter Southerner talked art criticism, music criticism, literary criticism, food criticism, and criticism criticism thanks to Tanz Farm.

They are nice. They are feisty. They can be nice and feisty - the way they were Tuesday night bless their hearts. These folks put ideas into words. We are fortunate to have them.

The Warhorse Cafe is the Goat Farm's living room.

20160322_200332
It's funky and flexible and multipurpose. It's got sofas and lamps, art and tchotchkes AND an indoor bathroom. Here's Jordan Stubbs who I joined in the outdoor SRO section.

I'm not so good at sitting quietly.

Daniel Fuller - Atlanta Contemporary is in the black shirt right hand to ear. Chuck Reese - Bitter Southerner is in the orange "T" giving the secret palms-down-crooked-finger-splay gesture.

Karen Head - Atlanta Review has right hand to chin and red boots (cool). Laura Relyea - ArtsATL has her Heineken in hand. Atlanta's artists and art fans fill the room.

Joe Dreher and AJ Robinson joined Jordan and me outside. Nice to meet you AJ.

The view from one of the dirtiest windows in town.

Finally, Terry's Tiny Critique:

I'd enjoy another kind of culture meeting. I want our art experts to talk mostly about art, to do it regularly, to be a bit ritualistic, a bit less open-ended. I want to get to know the art as we get to know the experts and the community.

Thanks so much. It's a pleasure to be here.

Notch8 and Atlanta Contemporary: Two Atlanta Galleries on the Tracks

I think art is an "indicator species"  and indications are pretty good around here: A mature thriving gallery on the near west side and brand new soon to be thriving gallery in south Atlanta. Parts of the same scene I think.

The Atlanta Contemporary's long running "Art Party" fundraiser was on August 29.

Notch8 Gallery's second exhibition ever was on September 11. (You really have to be on Facebook to follow art around here.)

You probably haven't been to either: Great spaces all done up for shows. So...

I did a Terry's Tiny Art Show Video for each. I love they way they play together with 500 year old polyphony and modern ambient.

They play one after the other. You can just listen while you are doing email.

Notch8:

Great Space! Bravo Sharon Dennehy.

Terry's Tiny Tips for Art Shows.

1. Just go. They really appreciate your interest.
2. Don't try to "get" anything.
3. Enjoy the people. Most don't "get it" any better than you. Talk to them. Most are just as shy as you are.
4. Galleries have their own regulars who only see each other at shows. They are the ones talking in groups, nice folks who will know the answers to your questions, who can point out the artists.
5. Admire the craftsmanship even if you don't enjoy the art.
6. Look at everything 3 times. It's not always love at first sight. Imagine them in your place.
7. Be grateful if you find something you like or affects you.
8. Terry's special tip: Don't hog the artists. Help them meet everybody.

IMG_20150911_212109 2015-09-11 Josh Feigert at Notch8 Gallery Atlanta
This one by Josh Feigert "got me" from across the room. I haven't the slightest idea why. I could totally imagine this at my house. I wonder if I'd like it as much the second time.

Your results may vary.

Bottoms Up and Blooming: Nexus Press & Atlanta Zine Fest

Do the Nexus Press alums ever mix it up with the zinesters?

I was thinking: Why wasn't the Atlanta Zine Fest at The Contemporary? Underground printing has come a long way but it's got deep roots.

Here is Taylor Moon's zine, Lost in Time and Space, with her self portrait from the new "Murmur Media" space on Broad Street in South Downtown.

IMG_20150501_201829 2015-05-01 Endless Road A Look at Nexus Press ACAC Atlanta Contemporary
Underground printing at maximum quality required expensive equipment and materials with maximum craftsmanship. These artistic avenues remain open while technology has reduced some of the costs. Picture from the superb "Endless Road: A Look at Nexus Press" show at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center.

The Atlanta Zine Fest would have been perfect amidst the Nexus Prsss show. But our young, fearless, risk oblivious, poor arty crowd looks elsewhere.

"They" are building an arts district from the bottom up in downtown Atlanta, it's even on MARTA. It's edgy, it's risky, it has a big-city feel. It's the perfect place for the Atlanta Zine Fest.

Thanks to the Goat Farm folks.

"Vernacular Cracker" Closing May 28 Re-post: Heather McPherson's Cabbagetown House Portraits

CLOSING: "House Portraits - House Painters - Vernacular Cracker" at VintageATL. Please come.
Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 6:00pm - 9:00pm
VintageATL 517 Flat Shoals Ave, Atlanta, Georgia 30316

2014-04-16_Vernacular_Cracker_evite_graphic_by_Vivian

We have a new pieces by William Mize and Joe Dreher (JoeKingATL).

We have three of Heather McPherson house portraits on loan. Here are re-post that shows some the rest.

Heather's House Portraits of Cabbagetown from ArchtectureTourist.com January 19, 2012

You should consider commissioning Heather to do a house you love.

Full disclosure #1: Heather McPherson is Sam's daughter. Sam McPherson is my friend, my daughter's too. Katherine and I are especially devoted to Sam as only music students can be devoted to a favorite teacher.

So of course I went to Heather's first solo show at Get This Gallery last Saturday. I've followed Heather and enjoyed her work for a couple of years. If you are an in-town architecture tourist, you've probably seen her work. She's getting somewhere.

Here's Heather, coat on her arm next to my tall son, getting a lot of attention at her opening.

P1040164-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--184-Pearl-Street-gable-shingle-detail-at-Get-This-Gallery
Full disclosure #2: I was and I am touched by her house portraits, plywood cut to shape, drawn and painted. The houses are all in Cabbagetown.

P1040167-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--109-Chester-Avenue-detail-at-Get-This-Gallery
But they are familiar to anyone from a Southern mill-town, including High Point where I grew up.

Full disclosure #3: I am impossibly sentimental. Heather's houses made me remember.

P1040162-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--792-Fulton-Terrace-detail-at-Get-This-Gallery
My mom preferred the clothesline even after she got a dryer.

P1040161-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--202-Carol-Street-detail-at-Get-This-Gallery
This summer I searched for my grandfather's house in High Point. I couldn't find it. It may be gone and the neighborhood isn't so hot now.

If Heather could have painted it's portrait, maybe his great great grands could know him a bit better.

P1040166-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--647-Bryan-Street-detail-at-Get-This-Gallery
Cabbagetown is a going concern, a real community in a house museum.

P1040135-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--135-Berean-Avenue-at-Get-This-Gallery

Folks put their yard waste on the curb every week.

P1040134-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--109-Chester-Avenue-at-Get-This-Gallery

This end of the house has some stories to tell.

P1040131-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--253-Powell-Street-at-Get-This-Gallery-1

You can do color in Cabbagetown.

P1040126-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--499-Wabash-at-Get-This-Gallery

Heather shows them as they are today, modern living in a century old setting.

P1040160-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--499-Wabash-graffiti-detail-at-Get-This-Gallery

Not all evolution is elevating.

P1040158-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--499-Wabash-edge-on-at-Get-This-Gallery
It's uncanny to see them this way. The real houses are shoulder to shoulder with their neighbors. Cut out and separated, these could be anywhere in the rural south.

P1040133-2012-01-18-by-Heather-Mcpherson--647-Bryan-Street-at-Get-This-Gallery
But this is how they look. Heather's paintings ring true to me.

Full Disclosure #4: You should consider commissioning Heather to do a house you love before it's gone. Architect: This would be an extraordinary gift for your clients.

Thanks for "Atlanta according to Terry Kearns" but I have to explain something...

Some of my answers threw JoAnn off and maybe I confused you too. I'll clear everything up in a second.

Thanks to Creative Loafing for this little feature: "Atlanta according to Terry Kearns" in which I answered 10 questions. I'm grateful to Thomas Wheatley who wrote it and to Eric Cash who took a wonderful picture that made me look slim.

Explanations:

1. My favorite nature spot in ATL is the Duck Pond in Peachtree Heights East.
JoAnn said, "I can't believe you said 'the duck pond.'"
I am not a nature boy, I don't "get" getting back to nature and I avoid camping at all times. But I do love the Duck Pond, even more because it's one block from Peachtree Street. It never fails to surprise and delight me.

P5170115-Duck-Pond-Garden-The-Pond
The Duck Pond.

2. East Atlanta is my favorite neighborhood.
I'm a sucker for neighborhood centers. I've just spent a month visiting East Atlanta to curate my first art show at VintageATL. I declare East Atlanta Village to be the equal of any neighborhood in Atlanta. You should try it out.

But what really put East Atlanta over the top is...

the Big Terry mural of me by Joe Dreher aka JoeKingATL at VintageATL.  See what I mean? Now all the girls want to be in my pictures. Bravo East Atlanta. Thanks to Carl Lavin for the picture.

3. Clough Commons at Georgia Tech is my favorite building.
I could only pick one. So I went for multipurpose, public, and crazy and the Clough is it. It's huge, amazing, open 24/7, and full of people.

P1000036-2011-09-14-Clough-Bldg-GaTech-West-Gallery-detail
Atlanta's "Spanish Steps" are part of  the Clough's indoor piazza. One of Atlanta's great spaces I think.

P1010767-2011-11-01-Ga-Tech-COA-Lecture-Clough-Building-Rooftop-Garden
And there's a garden walk on top.

I hope I've cleared everything up for now.

Thanks so much.

Joe Dreher Midnight-Live-Mural-Painting for "House Portraits - House Painters - Vernacular Cracker"

I'm flabbergasted, honored, and grateful but obviously not speechless.

Am I the last person to be the subject of a giant mural? If you don't have yours yet, please call Joe Dreher for all your mural needs and do request William Mize as co-muralist.

At 1:30 a.m. Joe (black shirt) and William (white shirt) took a hiatus to see what it looks like in daylight.

See "The Best Darn Art Show Ever Opens April 23 in East Atlanta, Six Days To Go"and Here's the Facebook Invite.
