Birthday, textile mills, Astolfi, coffee, whitespace, Emily Amy, Seth Thompson

Pretty good week! Far more happening than I can keep up with. And as usual not a single profound thought crossed my brain. I did have a birthday and haircut, "So I got that goin' for me, which is nice." - Carl


That was Wednesday.


This is just the sort of thing that I do on my birthday. Notice the curly "do?" Why didn't the loved ones tell me?

Thursday was haircut and textile mill, and gallery day.



As a product of a Piedmont mill town, High Point, I'm excited that folks are interested in my heritage. This was part of the Georgia Trust's 2012 Preservation Month Lecture Series.

I rushed from the Georgia Trust to Astolfi Art. They moved 100 yards and threw a party.


The moved across from Yeah Burger, next door to {Poem88} gallery. That's a large work by Kevin Archer.

I'm not an early riser but I headed to the Grant Park Octane on Friday morning.

I joined a monthly Atlanta "LikeMind" discussion. It was my first time and hey - free coffee!


The idea is to chat it up on the way to work once a month.


Brandon Barr is the co-host (with Chris Wojda) who buys the coffee, writer photographer, Maigh Houlihan, everywhere guy Carl Black and I were left after everyone else went to work. What a pleasure.

Friday night was gallery reception overload. I went to Emily Amy and whitespace.


This show - by Bernd Haussmann - was one of my "favoritist" ever at Emily Amy. The longer I stayed, the more I enjoyed the painting.


My camera didn't capture it.You'll have to go.


This is Bernd. He helped everyone else have fun.


And there was some us-serious cutting up. Bernd would not let them pose. Recognize 3 of Atlanta's young cultural V.I.P's?

I headed to whitespace gallery.


Teresa Cole, Professor and Chair, Printmaking at Tulane, opened "Between Origin and Present."


Teresa hung a cloud of prints each backed by a sari.


You could get lost in there.


Extraordinary prints.

On Saturday I went to Seth Thompson's MFA thesis show.


Seth's reception was in Solomon Projects space.


He came in peace.


His work was of the highest quality, museum quality. Seth said they were expensive to produce but fun. Stands to reason, he's Curatorial Assistant, Modern and Contemporary Art at High Museum Of Art

What a week.

Dinosaurs, Abe, Maya Kiva, Professorial, Classical, Emily Amy, Kai Lin

No dinosaurs were injured during our extended family outing to Fernbank on Sunday.


But some funny-bones were tickled.

What happened Monday? I don't remember. but Tuesday...


Architecture Tourist "The Next Generation" all play coed soccer on Tuesday nights at Silverback Park. Team Bottoms Up faced Team Tenacious D who had a real ringer: Abe.


The chicken played keeper. It wasn't pretty but it was funny.

Wednesday featured a double dip at the Georgia Tech College of Architecture. Georgia Tech offers many free lectures by international design talent sometimes on the very same day in the very same place at the very same time.


I encountered Maya Design unexpectedly. I was waiting for the professorial lecture and noticed students rushing upstairs to the Stubbins Design Studio. I followed and barged right in. I am, after all, looking a bit professorial these days.


The left goatee is Mickey McManus, president, the right goatee is founder Joe Bailey. They had a love-in, be-in, design-in, human factors-in in their own kiva.


Within minutes I had notes for a blog post on a subject I'd never considered. I offered to shine shows and clean toilets at Maya.


Then the professorial lecture: Georgia Tech had just named Dan Immergluck Professor of of City and Regional Planning and that is a big deal. For the occasion Professor Immergluck gave a lecture for all comers.


The lecture title came from Jean-Paul Sartre's grim play. What do academics have to say about housing trends? The room was full of students, practicing planners and developers who wanted to find out. They asked questions.

On Thursday something completely different:


The Southeast chapter of the Institute for Classical Architecture and Art (ICAA) met at the ADAC showroom of Ainsworth Noah.


It was mostly a party in a beautiful showroom. We met for a few minutes. July Talley deftly introduced the ICAA to newcomers. By the way: the Shutze Awards submission deadline is November 28, 2011.

Friday was for opening receptions at Emily Amy Gallery and Kai Lin Art.


Emily Amy showed new work by Cecil Touchon. He does collages, many from billboard waste. I like this one a lot.


The black and yellow too.


Emily dug through the file of Cecil's smaller work.


I love hovering over the flat file.

Then to Kai Lin Art for the opening of SNAP.


Kai Lin Art just moved from Midtown to Buckhead, almost next door to the Roxy.


This is Yu-Kai Lin himself. He remembers my name, bless his heart.

Busy week.

35 Galleries in 12 hours Part 6 of 6: Decatur & Inman Park

This was the Atlanta Gallery Association Art Sun-up to Sundown – Citywide Art Walk Saturday, August 21, 2010 10 am – 10 pm. So far:

• "Part 1: Dogs, Birds, and a Wild Hare"
• "Part 2 Buckhead Galleries"
• "Part 3: South of Pharr, Peachtree Hills, Bennett Street"
• "Part 4: Westside"
• "Part 5: Castleberry Hill and Mason Murer"
  

I was ahead of schedule and in the gallery groove but I was a little tired. Time to bring it home, Decatur and Inman Park.

Rose Squared Gallery and Framing was closed at 7:17p when I took this picture.


The 3 gallerias "On the Square" in Decatur were busy.

Worthmore Jewelers had the space, customers, and the interest so they became a gallery too. Here are "wearer of many hats"-Joan Wasser, Owner-Harris Botnick, and art director-Ashlei Thomas.


Inside art on top, jewelry on the bottom with people all over.


Now you know: Wild Oats and Billy Goats is a folk art gallery in Decatur, so there.


The whole universe is inside.

The Seen Gallery is on Church Street. As tired as I was, the gallery staff had also been on their feet for more than 10 hours on a "wawm" day. I salute them. Here are co-owners Bill Bibb and Amy Bradford who still had plenty of charm and good humor to encourage the now wilting Architecture Tourist, and a singing bird to boot.


This is clay artist, Michael Klapthor with his witty "Shy Fox." My picture doesn't do it justice.


Sycamore Place Gallery & Studios was party central on Sycamore Place. It was a batch of artist nooks with a big back room and patio.


On the right is the Sycamore Place impresario Sylvia McCorkle. She charms in 10 seconds. Visit for an irresistible dose of life energy.


This is an artist party space. The band and lady bodybuilders - really - had not even arrived.


Now for a jag out to Avondale Estates and wonderful MudFire Clayworks & Gallery. Here are wife/husband co-owners Luba Sharapan and Erik Haagensen holding Luba's mugs. They were shutting down after 11 hours.


I'd done 34 open galleries and 3 closed galleries. I had one hour to visit one more. Per my plan: I wanted to hit whitespace in Inman Park about dusk.


Susan Bridges, whitespace and Inman Park prime mover, was closing down too. When I told her about the other gallery dogs, well ...


it was 9:30 and I had done it.
