gloATL performs "Livers" at Flux 2011

Do you understand the title? If you do, you were probably there. If you don't, then follow gloATL and Flux Projects on Facebook, @gloATL and @FluxProjects on Twitter.

"Livers" was one of 34+ happenings on Friday night. Livers alone was too much to take in. Flux was overwhelming.

I'm afraid my little camera could only manage a blur, a poor substitute for being there.

A dancer waited alone in the fog between two buildings, a stage of wood chips.

Meanwhile, the company gathered on the Peter's Street railroad bridge.

P1000682-2011-09-30-Flux-Projects-gloATL-Troop-on Peters-Street

They bolted and stopped unpredictably in their lumpy leotards. Did they notify the Ministry of Silly Walks?

P1000682-2011-09-30-Flux-Projects-gloATL-Troop-on Peters-Street-detail

They knew where they were going but we didn't.

P1000684-2011-09-30-Flux-Projects-gloATL-Troop-on Peters-Street

They stopped to twist and shimmy to shake and wave. The man pushed the music in a grocery cart.

P1000685-2011-09-30-Flux-Projects-gloATL-Troop-on Peters-Street-Twisting

Look at the faces in the crowd. Most were seeing the dancers for the first time. "What is going on?" They moved fast. They turned right on Fair Street. I had to run to keep up.

When we'd stop to grok, shapes would slink by.

P1000692-2011-09-30-Flux-Projects-gloATL-duo-on-Fair-Street

The crowd was thick as the company raced north on Walker. I could barely keep up with the gloATL piggy-backers making their way though the crowd.

The company arrived.

I'm at a loss: It was a mystery. It was mesmerizing, unpredictable.

Not everybody enjoyed that sort of thing.

I was happy to lose myself for a little while.

P1000710-2011-09-30-Flux-Projects--gloATL-dancing-on-woodchips-squat

The crowd was part of the performance. For most gloATL performances, there isn't a specific place for the audience.

There were several pas-de-deux's.

There was some fun. I called this the turtle-back.

gloAtl leader and "dancemaker"Lauri Stallings looked on.

P1000714-2011-09-30-Flux-Projects--gloATL-Livers-dancing-on-woodchips-dance-pile

It wasn't all smooth ballet moves.

The troop climbed out though the balcony...

P1000719-2011-09-30-Flux-Projects--gloATL-Livers-dancing-on-woodchips-Climbing-Out

...leaving a pair alone in the fog.

It was magic for a while, disorienting, mesmerizing, memorable. There will only be 2 performance of Livers. This was the first. The 2nd began an hour later.

They needed a rest but the rest was part of the performance too.

And it didn't break the spell.

Now do you understand the title? I don't think I've explained a thing.

More Gallery Hop at Castleberry Hill (and gallery dog)

I continued my December 12th gallery hop at Castleberry Hill. One of my fellow mavens was a delightful dog, pictured below.

There is a new place, Liana Delgado Studio I didn't met Liana, maybe next time.

It's in the same building as Peters Street Gallery, Artists Trifecta Gallery, and Besharat Gallery. It's on the 2nd floor.

It's a great studio loft space on a corner.

Peters Street Gallery never disappoints. There is always some wit. Here is the cutting board Buddha thing.

Mersad Berber's paintings look like 2000 old studies, preserved just before deteriorating. If you saw Fellini's Roma, you know what I mean. These faded colors attracted me in a gallery filled with vibrant color. I was afraid if I didn't look now, they'd soon be gone.

We visit Flux 2010

I recommend skipping the words and just watching my unworthy slide show of pictures and short videos. I'm at a loss to explain. For me it was unexpectedly emotional, more than we expected, we were fortunate to be there.

October is the month of too much in Atlanta. We choose Flux 2010, a 6-hour light themed street party in one of Atlanta's most interesting neighborhoods. Here is what the pros at ArtsCriticATL.com had to say "Festival review: FLUX 2010, a one-night triumph of art, spectacle and amusement" and "FLUX Impressions 2010" from ArtRelish.com.
P1040361-2010-10-01-Flux-Amber-Boardman-Visual-Concerts-false-colorP1040332-2010-10-01-Flux-Project-7-Contemporary-Dance-Company-Midnight-in-the-GardenP1040321-2010-10-01-Flux-Marisa-Dipaolo-The-Garden-of-Oz-False-Colors
It was a shared experience: the comfort of the evening , wandering in the shade from one unexpected delight to another, the sense of a one-night only event. Mysteries suitable for all ages.

Let me just show you a couple of little videos. This one, "Lima Lives" by Ed & Linda Calhoun, and Ralph Brancaccio was about the zebra that escaped the circus last year. Lima danced on the wall to 911 recordings of the event.

A dayglo dance "Midnight-in-the-Garden" by Project 7 Contemporary Dance Company.

"Between You and Me" by Micah and Whitney Stansell was colossal yet with humane, human scaled content.

If you haven't seen the slide show yet here is another chance.

Make a note for next year about the first weekend in October: Flux 2011.

Artist J.D. McGuire at Flux and Artist Trifecta Gallery

Welcome to J.D. McGuire. He's down from New York as a Flux artist. In the meantime he's doing a one week one-man show at Artist Trifecta Gallery.

The Artist Trifecta Gallery reception was last night. It was the scene for Blayne Beacham's first big show. There was a quiet excitement about Flux this Friday, the oddest art event in Atlanta's oddest neighborhood. How big, how fun, how odd? Who knows, but the Architecture Tourists will be there.

Here is Artist Trifecta grand commandress Amanda Brown with J.D. His work: strange collages, spooky, witty, not too serious, requires a lot of looking to take in.

Artist Trifecta is a cool space in a a cool building in a cool neighborhood.

Some silliness was involved but we shouldn't blame Nora Wiley, owner of Wine Shoe who provided refreshments. She was just doing her job.

I really, really like J.D.'s sculptures out of corrugated cardboard. Here is "One Quarter Self Portrait."

See you at Flux, OK? J.D. will be projecting in the Courtyard of Castleberry Point Lofts. Say hello. Take advantage of Wine Shoe while you are there.
