I'm learning to enjoy them, particularly how the shadows play during the day.
AKA: helical columns, Solomonic columns, Barley-sugar columns, or twisted columns. It's an old idea. Trajan's Column is decorated with a helical band though the column itself doesn't twist. Bernini's (and Borromini, et al) baldachin in St. Peter's with it's twisted columns is among the most stunning works in the west.
I'm happy to see the tradition continue in my neighborhood.
They make a half twist, or do they?

Interesting. I don't believe I've seen those unless that's the condos/lofts on Glen Iris that were built a couple years ago. They have a similar color palette in the materials.

ReplyDeletePam, I realized too late that the eastern side absolutely spectacular shadows in the morning. My pictures are of the south side showing just one set of east columns in the light. I just get back there at the right time of the day.
