Teardown week 3 and why they removed the windows

I'm participating in my 8th Metamorphosis Monday at Between Naps on the Porch! Welcome. Two weeks ago they got started.

This week, the chainsaws of dawn removed the big tree out front. They will wait for it to dry out a little before they tear it down. I asked the project manager why they removed the windows. He said the glazing (of that era) could contain asbestos.

They left the big stump so the digger can leverage it out.

  1. That's interesting. I'd never considered asbestos as an ingredient in window glazing.

Don't you wonder what is being used in today's construction that will be the asbestos of tomorrow?

  2. It hurts my heart to see them take out that big beautiful tree like that. Couldn't they have just cut a few limbs off of it? So sad. This is an example of many builders' "Slash and Burn" attitudes! Note, I didn't use the word "all," as I know that there are still many other builders who see the value of leaving large trees in place!

  3. In the intown Atlanta neighborhoods far more trees crush houses and cars than they cut down. The permitting process here is time consuming and costly.

A really big one fell last week within 100 of our house. A friend from South Georgia visited us and couldn't believe they allow trees so close to houses. Here it's a sin to even think about cutting a tree.

  4. Wow. Looking quite pitiful, right now.

Drove past a large church in Athens, Ga. this morning and they were cutting down an old oak tree. The variable message sign in front of the church said something like - "We don't want to lose this tree, either." Kept a lot of people from calling, I guess. (WHY didn't I take a picture of that and post it???)

  6. Sad about the tree. It is really going to change the look of the house.

  7. Great following the progress on this tear down! I wonder what they are going to put up. I just drove down Broadland today, and they are putting up a 3 story house due to the fact that it is flood plain (no basement). I feel sorry for the house to the left - it is original to the neighborhood, and the owners did a beautiful renovation, then the house to their left was torn down and replaced with a 3 story house, and now the house to their right is a 3 story. They are dwarfed and their sunlight has been blocked.
